The Motheread® National Office is the sole provider of programming throughout our home county of Wake County, North Carolina. Providing these model programs informs our work nationally by allowing us to serve students for whom our curriculum is designed.

Services to Adults

Literacy development classes were provided throughout Wake County in partnerships with the North Carolina Community College System Office, the North Carolina Department of Correction, the Wake County Department of Human Services, SAFEchild, Inc., and Wake County Smart Start. Of those people served: 301 students attended Motheread/Fatheread® classes in community and correctional settings; and 293 students received instruction in special topic literacy classes. A total of 9,813 instructional hours were provided to these students. Following at least 16 hours of instruction, students improved an average of 1.02 grade levels on TABE and 1.35 on BEST. Additionally, these classes posted a 68% retention rate.

Services to Children

A family literacy initiative began with more than 293 children receiving instruction associated with their parents’ literacy classes. In partnership with Meredith College and community volunteers, 80 people provided 2,129 hours of reading and literacy support services in Wake County.
